Teaching critical thinking: dialogue and dialectic.John E. McPeck - 1990 - New York: Routledge.
This book, first published in 1990, takes a critical look at the major assumptions which support critical thinking programs and discovers many unresolved questions which threaten their viability. John McPeck argues that some of these assumptions are incoherent or run counter to common sense, while others are unsupported by the available empirical evidence. This title will be of interest to students of the philosophy of education.

    Time and Qualitative Time.John E. Smith - 1986 - Review of Metaphysics 40 (1):3 - 16.
IN A PREVIOUS study entitled, "Time, Times and the 'Right Time': Chronos and Kairos," I explored the distinction between these two aspects of time and their relations to each other. I wish to return to the topic in this paper, building on my previous discussion but bringing in some new dimensions that were unknown to me earlier on. I did not know, for example, that kairos, although it has metaphysical, historical, ethical and esthetic applications, is a concept whose original home, (...)

The Idea of the American University.John Agresto, William B. Allen, Michael P. Foley, Gary D. Glenn, Susan E. Hanssen, Mark C. Henrie, Peter Augustine Lawler, William Mathie, James V. Schall, Bradley C. S. Watson & Peter Wood (eds.) - 2010 - Lexington Books.
As John Henry Newman reflected on 'The Idea of a University' more than a century and a half ago, Bradley C. S. Watson brings together some of the nation's most eminent thinkers on higher education to reflect on the nature and purposes of the American university today. Their mordant reflections paint a picture of the American university in crisis. This book is essential reading for thoughtful citizens, scholars, and educational policymakers.

    John Dewey: Philosopher of Experience.John E. Smith - 1959 - Review of Metaphysics 13 (1):60 - 78.
Let it be clear at the outset that in reappraising Dewey's thought we have to do with no minute philosopher. In breadth of interest and range of thought he belongs with the great comprehensive thinkers of the past. And in contrast to many thinkers both in his own time and since, he had a constructive program. Philosophy for him meant more than analysis, even though analysis is an important part of the philosophic enterprise. Dewey's constructive philosophy has too often been (...)

Electroencephalographic registration of low concentrations of isoamyl acetate.John P. Kline, Gary E. Schwartz, Ziya V. Dikman & Iris R. Bell - 2000 - Consciousness and Cognition 9 (1):50-65.
Previous research has demonstrated electroencephalogram (EEG) changes in response to low-odor concentrations, resulting in near-chance detection. Such findings have been taken as evidence for olfaction without awareness. We replicated and extended previous work by examining EEG responses to water-water control, 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, and 1 ppm isoamyl acetate (IAA) in water paired with water only. Detection was above chance (>50%) for .001 and above, and alpha decreased only to those concentrations, suggesting that EEG changes corresponded to IAA awareness. However, when (...)

Sharing values to safeguard the future: British Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration as epideictic rhetoric.John E. Richardson - 2018 - Discourse and Communication 12 (2):171-191.
This article explores the rhetoric, and mass mediation, of the national Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration ceremony, as broadcast on British television. I argue that the televised national ceremonies should be approached as an example of multi-genre epideictic rhetoric, working up meanings through a hybrid combination of genres, author/animators and modes. Epideictic rhetoric has often been depreciated as simply ceremonial ‘praise or blame’ speeches. However, given that the topics of praise/blame assume the existence of social norms, epideictic also acts to presuppose (...)

    Divine Command.John E. Hare - 2015 - Oxford: Oxford University Press UK.
Divine Command defends the thesis that what makes something morally obligatory is that God commands it, and what makes something morally forbidden is that God forbids it. John E. Hare successfully defends a version of divine command theory, but also shows that there is considerable overlap with some versions of natural law theory. Hare engages with a number of Christian theologians, most especially Karl Barth, and extends into a discussion of divine command within Judaism and Islam. The work concludes (...)

This article summarizes a variety of current as well as previous research in support of a new theory of consciousness. Evidence has been steadily accumulating that information about a stimulus complex is distributed to many neuronal populations dispersed throughout the brain and is represented by the departure from randomness of the temporal pattern of neural discharges within these large ensembles. Zero phase lag synchronization occurs between discharges of neurons in different brain regions and is enhanced by presentation of stimuli. This (...)

Ethics in business decisions and competitive advantage.John E. Triantis - 2024 - New York, NY: Routledge.
Business ethics are the set of practices and policies that companies use to guide them through decisions about finances, negotiations and deals, corporate social responsibility, and more. Without a strong set of ethics, a business can run afoul of the law, encounter financial pitfalls and moral dilemmas. The objective of this book is a practical, fair, balanced, and objective treatment of the role of ethics in business performance of companies in competitive markets that demonstrates how ethics affects business culture, strategy, (...)

Hartmann's development was long and complex. Moreover, it is not easy to follow, and the path leading to the end passes through volumes of considerable scope and length. Apart from his Ethics which has had wide circulation among English speaking philosophers, Hartmann's other works are not very well known. Der Aufbau der Realen Welt first appeared in 1940, and represents the third part of his Ontologie; Zur Grundlegung der Ontologie, 1935, constitutes the first part; Möglichkeit und Wirklichkeit, 1938, the second; (...)

Well and Good presents a combination of "classic" and little-known but real-life cases. Included are a range of cases involving nurses and other health professionals as well as many involving doctors. The cases in the main body of the book are accompanied by the editors' impartial discussions of the issues involved. The final section is comprised of unanalysed cases for further study. For the new edition, the introduction has been expanded to include discussions of feminist bioethics and of virtue ethics, (...)
